How to Choose the Best Walk Behind Mower

Now that you have narrowed your focus to walk behind mowers, let's take a look at the different types to understand which one is best for you. There are different advantages for each, so read below and ask yourself, "Is this the right type of walk behind mower for me?"

Reel Mowers

Reel Mowers

Reel mowers are the least expensive lawn mower type and not that different from the very first lawn mower, which was invented in 1827. They are very environmentally conscious, producing no emissions and requiring no gas or electricity. You supply all of the power manually.

Reel mowers cut grass when you push them forward and the rotation of the wheels spins the reel of blades. The grass is pulled in by the blades and cut against the cutting bar. The cut is similar to how a pair of scissor blades come together to make a cut.

Reel mowers are great for getting a little exercise while you mow the lawn, but, no matter how fit you are, your reel mower will have trouble if you're running over debris in your lawn like twigs, acorns, and branches. Those items can cause jams in your reel mower.

Reel mowers require very little maintenance. In fact, the only maintenance would be to get your blades sharpened when they grow dull. That process can be very easy by using a special sharpening paste/compound that you spread on the blades. Push your mower, rotating the reel, and the blades sharpen themselves.

Gas Lawn Mowers

Gas Mowers

Most walk behind mowers are gas powered. Their engines give them the power and blade speed to easily cut thick grass. The majority of models are self-propelled, making it much easier to tackle hilly terrain and cutting down on the physical labors involved with using a walk behind mower.

Gas powered lawn mowers are much louder than a reel mower or an electric lawn mower, and they do produce emissions. But, the advantages of a gas powered mower are numerous. Their powerful engines make cutting grass easy, they can mow for longer periods of time, and there are far more makes and models to choose from.

The two types of gas mowers are self-propelled lawn mowers and push mowers. Push mowers, like reel mowers, only move forward when you push them yourself. The benefit is that push mowers tend to be less expensive and lighter weight than a self-propelled model. If you have a lot of hills or bumpy ground, propelling the mower yourself can require a lot of physical exertion.

A self-propelled lawn mower is the best option if you have hills to tackle and you're not looking to get the workout of a lifetime mowing them. A self-propelled lawn mower will either be driven by the rear wheels or the front wheels. Rear wheel drive mowers are the better option since the rear wheels are in better contact with the ground during operation.

Electric Lawn Mowers

Electric Lawn Mowers

Electric lawn mowers are quite popular with people with smaller yards for several reasons. Because they do not require gas or oil, electric lawn mowers are easier to maintain and they produce no emissions. An electric lawn mower also makes very little noise while running, compared to a gas mower.

While some electric lawn mowers may seem expensive, they cost little to service over the long haul. Besides sharpening or replacing your blade, you won't need to deal with the maintenance costs associated with a combustion engine, like replacing spark plugs and changing the oil.

Electric lawn mowers are one of two types, corded and cordless. Corded electric mowers require the use of an extension cord to power them. You won't have to worry about a battery dying because you have power whenever you're plugged in. Unfortunately, a cord is only so long and it can get in the way (or even get cut accidentally).

A cordless electric lawn mower is free of the constraints of a cord. You can mow out as far away from your house as you want, but you only have so long that the mower will run. Most cordless electric lawn mowers will run for about an hour when they have been fully charged. The higher the volts, the more power and battery life you'll get.
